Patient Information Leaflets

This information leaflet describes what constipation is and how it can be prevented and treated.

People vary a lot in how often they open their bowels but a person is generally considered to be constipated if they have fewer than three bowel motions a week or if there is often a need to strain to pass a stool. Remember, if your appetite is poor the number of bowel movements will be less.
