Waste Medicines

The Dumfries and Galloway NHS Dispose of your Unused Medicines Properly (DUMP) campaign in 2007 encouraged everyone to take back unwanted or unused medicines to their chemist for safe disposal. The DUMP campaign revealed 750,000 of prescription medicines are wasted every year across Dumfries and Galloway. To find out what this could have bought and how to help reduce medicines waste read this leaflet.

Generic Medicines

Doctors are encouraged to prescribe most medicines by their generic name. There are several reasons for this:

There are sometimes several brand names for one medicine which can cause confusion.

Generic medicines cost a lot less to the NHS.

Competition by different manufacturers usually drives down the cost of the medicine to the Health Service. Prescribing budgets are held by local Health Boards and are limited; therefore it makes sense for us to prescribe medicines by the generic names as much as possible, so that we can use savings in other areas of local healthcare.
